Akiu Onsen's nearby craft village gives you a unique chance to see some original Japanese woodworking and other crafts up close. Sendai is famous for its oaken cabinets and dressers, dyed textiles, and hand-carved kokeshi dolls. At the various workshops you'll be able to watch the craftsmen at work, and purchase any items that have caught your eye. For a more hands-on experience, try painting the face of a kokeshi doll yourself! You might be surprised by the different styles you and your friends come up with.
